His name is Ryan Richardson, but to everyone in the community he is known as ‘Excited
Beast’. Within minutes of talking with him, it is easy to understand why. His
passionate demeanor is infective; his genuine interests cover a myriad of topics (a
point I would try to exploit later in this interview). His loves are not centered
solely on Street Fighter, or even video games. They include sports, cars, comic
books, television and movies. While transferring our conversation into print, I had
to fight the litero-centric urge to reword some of the run-on sentences and
stream-of-thought answers I was getting.
But to do so would be to ruin the fast-paced, high-energy cadence that does well to
illustrate the spirit inside the aptly named Excited Beast. His intensity and energy
made this interview a true pleasure. It would be an amazement to me if you were not
excited after this interiew as well. Enjoy!

Gunnar Ohberg: Thank you Excited Beast for sitting here with us. First of all, where
does the name Excited Beast come from?

Ryan Richardson: We used to have East Point crews located in East Point in Atlanta,
Georgia. I went to a major and that’s how my name was really born, from a guy named
Big Man. He doesn’t really go to tournaments and play a lot, but he always came up
with this ridiculous stuff in games, like resets, combos, tech, and no one really
knows about him. He really gave me my name. I didn’t know people were that exciting
until I went to Final Round and I was like “Whoa, [Big Man] is crazy, he keeps hitting
me with these flame uppercuts!” And they just named me Excited Beast.

GO: When did you start playing video games?

RR: It was four years ago when I was playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2. That’s when I first
got into the scene. I was really late, I was at least eight to ten years late for
Marvel, so I got bodied a lot. I was a little late for that game.

GO: What got you into playing Street Fighter competitively?

RR: Competitively, I would say because it was a new style of game. It revolutionized
the fighting game scene. It was just a new game altogether, and it took gaming to a
new level that we’d never been at. Plus, I wanted to be [playing the game] early on,
I wanted to catch up to everybody else.

GO: So you never played a competitive game before Street Fighter?

RR: I did play competitive games before Street Fighter, but it was like Dragon Ball Z
games. I played that really competitively. I actually legitimately won a tournament
in that. I used to play in those types of tournaments with just friends, at
conventional centers and gaming events.

GO: Is it tough to balance work and school with your career as a competitive gamer?

RR: Yes, you could say it is. Because you have to get practice in sometimes. I kind
of get lazy with practice sometimes because I’ll be doing other things, and I don’t
put the effort in sometimes. But it’s definitely necessary to put the work into that,
because if you don’t, you’re not going to get better. You have to practice to get
better. There used to be an apartment, a place we would actually go play at, and that
helped out a whole lot because we all used to play each other, we all got good, and
that persistent playing really makes you feel better as well.

GO: Where would you like to see the state of competitive gaming a year from now? What
do you think needs to be changed or improved?

RR: We need to be more like professional basketball players. I play sports a lot. I
was really good at sports, I play a lot of basketball, a lot of football, high school
level, I’ve also played in the country as well. It comes naturally to me, but the
gaming system… it’s more of a thinking game. This is one of the hardest things I’ve
done in my life, to be honest. This is way harder than playing in basketball, I
believe, because you have to go off a lot of human reaction, and you have to know
certain situations and prepare for them. Unlike other sports that are physical, where
you can overpower people or be naturally faster than people, in gaming you gotta have
reaction speed, and know the mental game. Downloading people, seeing what their
habits are, breaking those little tendencies from people makes you a good player, and
it’s really hard to do that sometimes. It’s really hard to get into, it’s super
technical. It’s like playing chess… any mistakes can cost you to lose the match.
It can build momentum for one person and then the whole match just completely changes.

GO: Is there something that you think would make gaming more accessible to the general
public?

RR: Well, when they made Marvel vs. Capcom 3, they made it easier to play. They tried
to keep the mental game, and they made it accessible for anybody. Casual players can
play it, people who want to get into it, it’s easy for them to get into it and learn
some combos. That’s cool, I respect that. Games like that are actually helping bring
more people in who just don’t play competitively in fighting games. That’s a good
idea, and they should probably do that for Street Fighter too. But still don’t take
away from the mental game.

GO: If you could actually physically become any Street Fighter character, who would
you become and what would you do between the actual Street Fighter tournaments?

RR: I would definitely become Ken. Ken Masters is awesome. He’s stylish… he gets
everything he wants, basically. He’s just born with all this talent, and he’s really
smart. He actually runs an empire in the storyline, he owns his father’s business
now. He makes billions of dollars and does anything he basically wants. He runs a
whole company, so his company is involved with everything in the globe, like
economics, war, everything, he’s involved in everything. I would definitely be Ken
Masters. And in a tournament, I would just try to win.

GO: Well, in between tournaments, with all that power and all of that money and all
that skill, what would you do?

RR: Oh, well I would just do what Ken does. I’d just go to fighting tournaments, I
would just fight. I’d go test my mettle against other people as well, or I’d just
take vacations or something, just go out and see the world. Do something fun.
Anything I can think of, I would try it. Like building a car, or building a boat.

GO: If the Hulk, Gambit, and Jubilee ran into Captain Planet and for absolutely no
reason they started brawling, how would that fight go down? Walk us through that
fight, keeping in mind that no one is allowed to kill anyone.

[Editor's Note: The explanation that followed would make absolutely no sense if it was
printed ver batim, so instead I am executing my editorial powers to paraphrase a bit.
The basic gist of Excited Beast's arguement was that through attrition, and because of
Captain Planets' sources of power, Captain Planet would end victorious. Excited Beast
believed he would dispense of the Hulk first, as the Hulk represented the only real
threat to Captain Planet. Gambit and Jubilee would prove useless, because their
energy projectiles would only strengthen Captain Planet, who would feed off of the
energy. Captain Planet would be smarter and more strategic than the Hulk, and would
use his ability to fly to his advantage. Despite a brutal fight, Captain Planet could
never be officially destroyed, because he could retreat back to the rings if
necessary. Excited Beast's arguement was basically one impassioned five-minute burst
of energy disguised as a run-on sentence. It was awesome and I applaud his answer and
admire his enthusiasm.]

GO: What’s your favorite kind of beer?

RR: I like Corona’s. I like the taste.

GO: What is your favorite Johnny Depp movie?

RR: Pirate’s of the Caribbean. All of them.

GO: Do you count the fourth movie?

RR: Yea, [I] count the fourth one. It was good. It’s still a good movie. This man
is just an amazing actor, he keeps me entertained at all times. He is Captain Jack
Sparrow. You can’t get bored watching this man.
